Money Matters is a pioneering initiative led by Barnardo’s SEEN that tackles the urgent need for financial literacy among children and young people across the UK—particularly those most at risk of structural disenfranchisement.
At its core, the project recognises that financial exclusion is often a symptom of deeper systemic inequalities. Many young people, especially those affected by racial injustice, intergenerational poverty, or experience of the care system, are not equipped with the tools, knowledge, or support systems needed to navigate money management confidently or sustainably.
Through dynamic partnerships with Mercury Minds and My Financial Harmony, Money Matters delivers a youth-centred, trauma-informed financial education guide. The content is intentionally accessible, blending professional financial expertise with real-world insights and lived experience. It covers foundational concepts such as:
What sets Money Matters apart is its holistic approach. It doesn’t just teach numbers—it fosters a mindset shift, helping young people reframe their relationship with money. The guide encourages critical reflection through journalling exercises, real-life case studies, and practical goal-setting tools. Personal stories from relatable financial mentors illustrate the transformative power of financial literacy and show that economic stability—and even wealth—is possible, regardless of background.
The resource promotes long-term thinking, encouraging users to dream bigger, plan smarter, and act boldly. Whether it’s saving for education, launching a business, or achieving financial independence, Money Matters champions the idea that every young person deserves the opportunity to thrive economically.
Ultimately, this project is about more than budgeting. It’s about justice, empowerment, and agency. By closing the financial literacy gap and providing practical, culturally relevant tools, Money Matters equips vulnerable young people to break cycles of struggle and shape brighter, more secure futures.
At SEEN, we pride ourselves on the work we do, and are striving to achieve our aims of creating a society where children and young people of African, Asian and Caribbean heritage have equitable futures – working with our partners to deliver these solutions.
